Why Adler University Aligns With My Values

Choosing a PsyD Program Rooted in Diversity and Social Justice

Adler University’s Doctorate in Clinical Psychology aligns deeply with my personal values and professional goals. From my perspective, psychology is not only a clinical discipline but also a social responsibility; one that requires attentiveness to systems of power, cultural context, and lived experience. Adler’s explicit commitment to diversity, social justice, and community engagement reflects the type of psychologist I am striving to become: one who integrates clinical competence with cultural humility and advocacy. Its emphasis on diversity, social justice, and community engagement reflects the kind of psychologist I strive to become. Mental health does not exist in a vacuum; it is shaped by access to resources, experiences of discrimination or privilege, community support systems, and generational narratives. A training environment that consistently reinforces this perspective is essential for developing the kind of clinical judgment and empathy I hope to bring into my future practice.

Chicago’s richly diverse population offers invaluable opportunities to work with individuals from a wide range of cultural, socioeconomic, and lived experiences. I completed my master’s degree in Chicago and felt deeply connected to the community through both academic and professional engagement. Exposure to this level of diversity challenged me to think more critically about identity, systemic barriers, and the ways in which mental health services can be made more equitable and accessible. It also reinforced my belief that effective clinical work must be responsive to the specific contexts in which people live.

Adler’s Military Clinical Psychology emphasis also resonates with me. My personal and professional relationships include veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. These relationships have shaped my understanding of trauma, resilience, and service—making this focus area both meaningful and relevant to my future work.
